European seminar for choral composers (cancelled due to Coronavirus)

The European seminar is a professional masterclass on choir composition and arrangement. It is organised by Feniarco in partnership with European Choral Association - Europa Cantat and in collaboration with Arcova (Regional Association of choirs from Valle D'Aosta).

The seminar

The seminar is addressed to composers and choir conductors with experience in writing and composition. It is possible to register as an active participant or as listener. The course is open to a maximum number of 30 active participants (10 for each workshop)

The lecturers will select the participants based on: age (preferably under 45), curriculum with qualifications and experiences highlighted, two choral compositions that will have to be attached at the application form.

The week will consist in individual and group lessons for a total of approximately 7 hours per day starting from Monday. For the entire duration of the seminar, the active participants will have at their disposal a laboratory choir, conducted by the lecturers of the workshops that will have the task to perform the compositions in progress.

The seminar will finish on Saturday 25 July with an evening concert performing some of pieces composed during the week and selected by the lecturers.

The working language will be English.
Aosta, a pearl in the heart of the Alps, will host from 19th to 26nd July 2020 the eleventh edition of the European Seminar for Choral Composers.
Lessons will be held in Fondazione Maria Ida Viglino (Aosta, Via S. Giocondo 8) and in Convitto Regionale Federico Chanod (Via Cretier 2). 

Contents and aims

The course proposes the following aims:
• writing new choral pieces and/or arrangements;
• working in very close contact with professional and expert lecturers, in order to gain specific techniques and methodologies;
• learn and develop the expressive potentials of the "choir" as musical instrument;
• researching and acquiring a personal style through recent choral composition’s languages and new techniques;
• experiencing and getting to know the relationship between composition and performance, addressing the composition according to the real abilities of a skilled amateur choir;
• creating and developing a network among young composers, as a vehicle and an exchange of views about one's work.

Applications

To participate to the European Seminars for Young Composers, please fill in the online application form (available on www.feniarco.it) and pay the participation fee before the 31st March 2020 . Late applications may be considered if there are free places. The fee can be paid:

Country groups: people from different countries pay a different participation fee for the Seminar. The countries are the usual codes for internet domains (in case of any doubt, please write to info@feniarco.it).

Country group 1: AT, BE, CA, CH, DE, DK, ES, FI, FR, HK, IE, IL, IS, IT, JP, LU, NL, NO, SE, SG, UK, US.
Country group 2: CN, CY, CZ, EE, GR, MT, PT, SI, SK, TW, ZA and some overseas countries.
Country group 3: AL, AM, BA, BG, BY, GE, HR, HU, KZ, LT, LV, MD, ME, MK, PL, RO, RS, RU, TR, UA.

The fee includes the attendance to the workshops, the final concert and the logistical organisation. In case of not admittion, the fee will be refunded.

The organisers of the Seminar offer a package for food in full board (from dinner on Sunday 19 July to breakfast on Sunday 26 July) and accommodation in double/triple room with private facilities at the Convitto Regionale F.
